Douglas T. Blake

Brunswick-Douglas T. Blake age 86 of Beech Drive died Wednesday, August 23rd at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Portsmouth, NH on April 30, 1931 the son of Mark Jr. and Elizabeth Terry Blake.

Doug was a 1949 graduate of Traip Academy in Kittery. In 1953 Doug earned his BS degree in education from Gorham State Teacher’s College. In 1959 he earned his MA degree in history from the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH.

On September 20, 1952 he married the former Louisa Harriette Milliken. She died February 24, 2013.

Doug served as a teacher at York High School from 1955-1959. He then served as coordinator of Social Studies in Ipswich, MA public schools from 1960-1964. From 1964- 1987 Doug served as chairman of the History Department for Weymouth, MA public schools. After moving to Maine with his wife Louisa in 1988, Doug worked as an instructor at Southern New Hampshire University from 1989-2011.

Doug enjoyed building plastic model aircraft with his nephew Jim and going to camp on Echo Lake in Dexter with his brother Mark and sister-in-law Gloria.

Doug was a member of the Weymouth, MA Retired Teachers Association, the Maine Maritime Museum where he also volunteered from 1994-2003 and the International Plastic Modeler’s Society, USA.

Doug had also served as President of the Ipswich, MA Teacher’s Association from 1962-1963 and had also volunteered at the former Parkview Memorial Hospital from 1989-1994.

Doug earned the Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award 2001-2002 and the Outstanding Undergraduate Faculty of the Year 2011-2012 all from Southern New Hampshire University Brunswick Center.

Surviving besides his brother Mark and sister- in-law Gloria Blake of Eliot are several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, August 29th from 6-8 PM at Stetson’s Funeral Home 12 Federal St. Brunswick, where a funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 30th at 10 AM with the Rev. Gordon Cook officiating.

A reception will immediately follow the service in the Stetson’s Funeral Home Family Reception Center. Interment will be in Dunstan Cemetery, Scarborough.
