Frances Clark Hokanson

Obituary
September 16, 1920 - April 29, 2011

BRUNSWICK--Frances Clark Hokanson, age 90 of Douglas St., died at Sedgewood Commons on Friday, April 29th. Fran was born in Melrose, Massachusetts on September 16, 1920, the daughter of George S. and Bessie Baillie Clark. She was raised in Quincy, Mass. and graduated from Quincy High School in 1938. She attended The Charles School for secretarial studies in Cambridge, graduating in 1941. Fran began her professional career at a local bank and then accepted a position as receptionist in the Bursar’s Office at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It was through that connection that she met her boss’s son, Wolcott A. Hokanson, Jr.—known to all as "Hokie." On April 5, 1947, Fran married Hokie, moved to Brunswick and took a job at Bowdoin while Hokie finished his studies at Bowdoin. After short stints back in Quincy, New Haven, CT, and Long Island, NY, Fran and Hokie settled permanently in Brunswick.

Fran appeared in a variety of theatrical performances at Bowdoin in the 1950s, her favorite being Noel Coward’s comedy Blithe Spirit. Fran was a wonderful mother and an accomplished seamstress and homemaker. An active community volunteer, she supported numerous organizations including the Coffin School, Regional Memorial Hospital, Curtis Memorial Library, and the Village Improvement Association. She was a den mother for the Cub Scouts for several years, as well as volunteering for the First Parish Church. Fran was also a very active participant in the Class of 1950’s alumni activities at Bowdoin.

Fran is survived by sons Bradley & family of Santa Rita, Guam; Clark & family of Brunswick; by daughter Kimberly & family of Medfield, Massachusetts; and by daughter-in-law Claudette & family of Biddeford, as well as nieces and nephews Eric Hope, Beverly Hope, Cindy Hope, Harriet Hope, and Harry Hope and their families.

Fran was predeceased by her husband Hokie in 1995, her son Ross Baillie Hokanson in 1984, and her sister Roberta Clark Hope in 1978.

Fran’s family wishes to thank all the wonderful staff at Sedgewood Commons for their kind and tender care. It is much appreciated.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Fran’s memory to the Bowdoin College Alumni Fund, Class of 1950, Brunswick, ME 04011 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 170 U. S. Route 1--Suite 250, Falmouth, ME 04105.
