Barbara Mary Leonard

Brunswick-Barbara M. Leonard, age 93 of Church road, passed away Thursday, June 9th at Mid Coast Senior Health Center. She was born September 16, 1917 in Brunswick, the daughter of George W. and Mildred Hunt Leonard.

She attended Growstown School and graduated as the class valedictorian from Brunswick High School in 1934. Barbara graduated from Bates College in 1938 and from Bowdoin College in the 1960’s with an M.S. in Mathematics.

Her teaching career began in the Biology Department at Brunswick High School in the 1940’s and, in the 1950’s, she taught at the Paris American High School in France. She returned to Brunswick High School to teach Mathematics, became the department chair and retired in 1972.

Barbara joined the Peace Corps after her retirement, teaching Mathematics in Kenya for three years. Upon her return from Africa, she worked as a travel agent for Stowe Travel. She enjoyed experiencing different cultures as a world traveler, especially to Europe and Africa. Barbara also loved spending time in her cottage at Birchmere in Harpswell.

Barbara was a member of the Brunswick Teaching Associations and the Peace Corps. She was a devoted member of All Saints Parish-St. Charles Church and a tried and true Democrat. She was a devoted daughter, sister and an especially devoted aunt.

She is survived by her Brother Robert Leonard and his wife Anne of Punta Gorda, FL, nieces and nephews Margaret Leonard of Harpswell, Elizabeth and her husband Gary Lawless of Nobleboro, Catherine and her husband Scott Woodruff of Brunswick, and Donald and his wife Amy of Hiram, 11 other nieces and nephews, and many grand nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by two sisters Mary and Frances and four brothers Martin, Joseph, Donald, and Richard.

Visiting hours will be held Monday, June 13th from 6-8 PM at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 14th at 11 AM at All Saints Parish-St. Charles Borromeo Church, 132 McKeen St., Brunswick, with the Rev. Frank Murray officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot at St. John’s Cemetery in Brunswick.

Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
