Courage, Strength, Dignity…

The pivotal moment when Laura suspected life would forever be changed, April 2001.  What she did not realize was that from that moment of diagnosis of leukemia in 2001 and throughout the last 15 years came the ultimate gift she would give those that surrounded her… friends, family and even acquaintances from Maine to our "haven” of Dana-Farber.

Selfishly, I will take a moment to say what she brought to our small but mighty family.  Clarity.  Clarity in the simplest of moments, clarity in the sweetest moments, clarity in the hardest moments of struggle, clarity in moments of fear, clarity in the moments of joy and clarity on how we all should define courage, strength and dignity.

She lived each day in kindness.  Not without pain.  Not without experiencing life’s disappointments.  But she lived with a smile for all to see beyond that pain, beyond her disappointments… we can, have and could learn so much from her passion for life, people and her ability to always move forward.  Not to be defined by a moment in time but by a lifetime of compassion.  Do not define your worth by material possessions but by what you bring to this world in life and in death!

I believe Laura would want to extend her humble gratitude to her amazing medical family who touched her life in the last 15 years and each was able to provide and show and give without hesitation: dignity, decency and grace.  Second to none!

And to each and every nurse who extended care, compassion, comfort, laughter and stories to Laura for 15 years, the mere sentiment of thank you seems to miss the mark for just how much each of you brought to her world during each hospital stay and every treatment.  Know that what you provided was immeasurable, absolutely priceless.

Laura is survived by Gerard Robbins, her father of Brunswick, her constant champion. Paula Robbins, her mother of Topsham, her nurturer.  Jami Robbins, her sister of Scarborough. Sean Davis, her brother-in-law of Scarborough.  Gavin Scott-Robbins Davis, her beloved, adored nephew of Scarborough.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Coastal Humane Society, 190 Pleasant St., Brunswick, or to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168.  The family requests that no flowers be sent.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, January 29 from 5-7 PM at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick, where memorial condolences may be expressed and a video tribute viewed at
