Edwin C. Young Jr.

Brunswick-Edwin C. Young, Jr of Mere Point Road died Friday October 21, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.  He was born in Boston, MA January 12, 1936 the son of Edwin C and Lillian (McCormick) Young, Sr.

He attended Brunswick schools and was a 1954 graduate of Brunswick High School.  Mr. Young attended Maine Central Institute–during his year, the football, basketball and track teams on which he played won State prep school titles.  He attended the University of Maine in both Portland and Orono studying education.  He joined the Maine National Guard and served 51/2 years retiring as a Sergeant.  He coached Babe Ruth baseball served as their State Director, later coaching Brunswick Junior High basketball, football as well as Junior Varsity girl’s basketball.

On November 14, 1964 he married Joan L. Massey.  They recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.

Mr. Young worked as the Assistant Director of the Brunswick Recreation Department.  He then worked as a self-employed lobster fisherman, fishing from Interstate Lobster in Harpswell for most of his life.

He enjoyed attending family sporting events traveling the country watching his son participate and coach at the college level. 

Surviving besides his wife Joan of Brunswick, are daughters Karen O’Connor and her husband Leighton of Manchester, NH, Kelly Rom and her husband Scott of Jacksonville, FL, son Brian Young and his wife Lillian of Austin, TX.  A sister Joan Waller of Blakely, GA and niece Pamela Wolf and also survived by two grandchildren Lauren and Alex of Jacksonville, FL.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday, October 26 from 6-8 PM at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, October 27 at 11 AM at St. Charles Borromeo Church-All Saints Parish, 132 McKeen St., Brunswick.  Burial in St. John’s Cemetery, Brunswick will be held at a later date.
