Dr. I. Benjamin Young

Freeport- Dr. I. Benjamin Young age 86 of Harvest Ridge Road, died Sunday June 3rd at Horizons Rehabilitation Center in Brunswick following a prolonged illness. He was born in Durham, North Carolina on April 13th, 1932 the son of Irving and Pauline Young.  He attended North Carolina schools and was a 1950 graduate of Highland Academy in Tennessee.  In 1953 he graduated from Southern Missionary College in Collegedale Tennessee.  He continued his education and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loma Linda University in 1957. Following dental school he was commissioned as a Captain in the U.S. Army.  He was honorably discharged from the Army Dental Corps on June 15, 1964.

Dr. Young practiced dentistry in Alabama and Virginia before establishing in Bath in 1969 where he practiced until he retired in 2005.  On June 28, 1988 he married Charlotte "Sunshine” Day Burden.  They resided together in Pownal for over 25 years.  Sunshine worked with Dr. Young as a Dental Hygienist in his practice for many years.  Dr. Young was a proud member of both the American Dental Association and the Maine Dental Association.  He was well-known and loved by his patients in the area for providing high quality dentistry with a gentle touch.  Many of his patients referred to him as "Gentle Ben.”  Aside from his passion for his work, he enjoyed being with family, photography, cars, food and a good book.

Surviving is his beloved wife Charlotte "Sunshine” of Freeport, his daughters Rheba McGraw of Cumberland and Jennifer Lingerfelt of California, son Dwight Young of Virginia, step sons Robert Eberhard of Florida and Jeremy Burden of Pownal.  He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Keith Young of Tennessee.

Visiting hours will be from 5-7 PM on Friday, June 22nd at Stetson’s Funeral Home 12 Federal St. Brunswick. A funeral service will be at 10 AM Saturday, June 23rd at the funeral home with Col. Jonathan McGraw U.S. Army officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Pownal.
