Obituary

Dennis W. Herer, 74, of Brunswick, ME, died at home on June 24th after a brave struggle with Lewy Body Dementia.  He was born June 17, 1945 in San Diego, CA to Alfred E. and Alice L. Herer.  He attended the University of Notre Dame and received a Bachelor's degree in 1967.  In 1964-65 Dennis joined 51 other Notre Dame sophomores in a year-long study abroad adventure to Innsbruck, Austria.  Learning German that year stimulated in him a permanent love of language and languages.  After college he served in the Peace Corps in Turkey, teaching English, and then attended the University of California, Irvine, receiving a Bachelor's degree in Classics in 1972 and a Master's degree in 1977.  Dennis taught Latin, Greek and Ancient History at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT, from 1979-84. Most of his career as a teacher was spent at Tabor Academy, Marion, MA, where he worked from 1984 until his retirement in 2010. He belonged to the Classical Association of New England, serving as a board member from 1994-2002 and as President in 2000-01. Besides teaching, Dennis enjoyed playing the guitar, travel, languages, reading, and being with family.  He is survived by his wife, Joan (Moranda) Herer; a son, Thomas Herer, his partner Danielle Lane, and daughters Colette, Thea, and Charlotte; a daughter, Annie Herer, her fiancé Scott Sawyer, and Scott's daughter Annabella; and by many dear friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association or the Spondylitis Association of America. Visiting hours will be held Sunday, July 7th from 5-7PM at Stetson's Funeral Home 12 Federal St., Brunswick, Maine 04011. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, July 8th at 11 AM at St. Charles Borromeo Church-All Saints Parish 12 McKeen St., Brunswick, ME.
