Brunswick - Frank E. McAllaster, age 81 of Durham Road died with family at his side Friday, September 17, at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta. He was born in Colebrook NH on July 1, 1929, the oldest son of Neal and Effie Rowell McAllaster. He attended Colebrook schools, enlisted in the US Navy in 1946, and was stationed throughout the Mediterranean, Pacific, and US. While at Memphis Naval Air Station, he met Jean Crawford at a dance on Halloween 1953. They were married three months later, on February 6, 1954. Mr. McAllaster continued to serve in the Navy for another 13 years, repairing piston engine aircraft such as P-2s and P-3s. He left the service on July 10, 1967, and worked for Sears in Brunswick as an auto mechanic until his retirement in 1997.
Mr. McAllaster loved working on his farm on Durham Road, raising livestock and simultaneously maintaining as many as five vegetable gardens. He was an active member of the Elks Lodge in Brunswick, serving as Exalted Ruler 1999-2000, and at the American Legion in Topsham. With his burly build and white beard, he filled the role of Santa Claus in many Christmas events.
Surviving is his wife of 56 years Jean of Brunswick, his son Donald and wife Sue of Shrewsbury MA, daughter Susan and partner Lonnie of Brunswick, and son Patrick and wife Christy of Brunswick, along with four grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Neal McAllaster and wife Connie of Fayetteville, NC, and predeceased by sister Gleigh, of Millinocket.
A memorial service with military honors will be held Thursday, September 23rd at 1PM at Stetson's Funeral Home 12 Federal St. Brunswick. Interment at a later date will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Mt. Vernon Road Augusta.
