Obituary

Richmond- USN Ret. CDR Frank Thelen III, age 72 of Brunswick Road died July 13th in his sleep of ALS at The Hospice House of Androscoggin County in Auburn. He was born Sept 12, 1938 the son of Frank and Lucy Thelen. He attended New York City Schools and graduated from Public School 82 Manhattan in 1952. On Nov 30th 1963 he married Pauline Cloutier. CDR Thelen received his BS at New Hampshire College 1988. CDR Thelen enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Oct 1956 serving 26 years. In August, 1964 RM1 Thelen entered OCS under the Navy's Integration Program and was commissioned as an Ensign end of 1964. Warships he served on include the USS C.H. Roan (DD 853) as ASW officer, USS J.K. Taussig (DE 1030) as Executive Officer, USS Loyality (MSO 457) as Executive Officer for two deployments Coastal Surveillance Forces in Vietnam, USS Jonas Ingram as Executive Officer, USS Virgina as CSO DESTRON 26. Other tours included CINCLANTFLT. CDR Frank Thelen Retired from the Navy in 1981 and returned to Maine in 1982. Frank enjoyed being a Ham Radio Operator as call sign NO1H. He particularly enjoyed being part of the 4 PM'ers, a group of Ham Radio Operators that would met on the radio at 4 PM every day. Frank is survived by his wife Pauline of Richmond, his son James of West Bath, his brother Joe and sister Lucy Anne both of New York, New York.   Visiting hours will be held 4-6PM, Wednesday, July 20th at Stetson's Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM, Thursday, July 21st, at St. John's the Baptist Church-All Saints Parish, 39 Pleasant St., Brunswick with the Rev. Frank Murray officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at 1PM at the New Maine Veterans' Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, ME. Donations in his memory may be made to the Coastal Humane Society, 30 Range Rd., Brunswick, ME 04011. Memorial condolences may be expressed and a video tribute viewed at stetsonsfuneralhome.com
