Topsham-George C. Wilson age 91 of River Road, Lt. Commander USN Retired died Wednesday, May 1st at the Mid Coast Senior Health Center in Brunswick.
He was born in Opelousas, LA on August 3, 1921 the son of George and Lily Andrus Wilson. George was a graduate of Southwestern Louisiana College and enlisted in the US Navy following his graduation in 1942. George served in the South Pacific during World War II. George began his enlisted career as an Anti Submarine Warfare Specialist while serving onboard many US ships, including aircraft carriers. He also served on board the command ship during the Cuban missile crisis.
George rose to the rank of Lt. Commander while continuing to serve his country for 30 years before retiring in Topsham, Maine in 1972. Upon retirement, his main interest was serving as a Eucharistic Minister at the Brunswick Naval Air Station Chapel. George also served as President of the Fleet Reserve Association in Brunswick, Maine, the American Legion Post 202 in Topsham, Maine and the Maine State Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. George was loved and respected by many in the Mid Coast area for his generosity and willingness to help others.
He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy Wilson.
George is survived by his five children: Barbara Wilson of Wiscasset, ME; Bonnie Carr of Augusta, ME ; Duane Wilson of Southampton, PA; Diane Miller of Taberg, NY and Larry Wilson of Lisbon Falls, ME. George is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held Monday, May 6th from 4-7PM at Stetson's Funeral Home 12 Federal St. Brunswick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, May 7th at 10AM at St. Charles Borromeo Church-All Saints Parish 132 McKeen St. Brunswick. Committal prayers with full military honors will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Brunswick. There will be a reception at the Captain Daniel Stone Inn at 10 Water St. Brunswick immediately following the service at the cemetery.
