Obituary

Brunswick, ME-Margaret G. Washington (known to her friends as Nancy) died on Wednesday, May 9 at 4:30 a.m. Nancy was born in Camden, NJ on October 2, 1935. She was the daughter of Alexander and Anna Garwood. She attended Riverton Public School, Palmyra High School, and graduated from William & Mary College in 1956 with a degree in biology. Nancy was a resident of Riverton, NJ for 73 years. She was active in the Riverton Yacht Club, the Riverton Free Library (she organized the first library book fair), the Riverton Tree Commission, and the Riverton Historical Society. She was also a Girl Scout leader and spent many hours of service in assisting refugees from Kosovo and Serbia in conjunction with Catholic Charities. Dogs were a lifelong love of Nancys and she adopted many over the years and also worked with various animal welfare agencies. Nancy was a regular volunteer to the Red Cross and donated over 50 gallons of blood in her lifetime along with donating platelets as well.   Nancy had a very successful career in real estate and made many friends in addition to her wide circle of friends in her hometown. Nancy is survived by her husband William M. Washington of Brunswick, ME whom she was married to for 56 years. Her children are John Washington of Athens, GA (wife Anne, children Ben and Jessica), Charles Washington of Brunswick, ME (wife Balinda, children Abby, Liz, and Sam), son Richard Washington, daughter Katie Hickey of Riverton, NJ (sons Christian and Jonathan), and daughter Laura Russell of Scarborough, ME (husband Alan, children Courtney and Colin). She is predeceased by her brother Donald Garwood and son-in-law James Hickey. Nancy will be missed deeply by her family and friends.
