Merle Davis Kennedy (93) died peacefully on May 15 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, surrounded by family. He was the youngest of eight children of Charles Blair Kennedy and Rae Ellen Davis of Richmond, Maine. He was predeceased by siblings: Myrtle, Marjorie, Ethel, Charles, Eunice, Hollis, and George. After the death of his older sister Ethel, his mother and father raised her four children: Dorothy, Leroy, Ellen-May, and Martha Jane.
He was married to Margaret Elizabeth Kennedy for fifty-nine years until her death in 2010. In retirement, they spent much time traveling and seeing many parts of the United States and the world.
In his first career, he was part of the crew that built Parkview Hospital. Later he worked at Bath Iron Works and then at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he took pride in his work building submarines and participating in sea trials. He retired in 1972 and moved his family to Brunswick, Maine. During his second career, he worked for the State of Maine for ten years and was self-employed. Well into his eighties, he spent many years donating his time at the Brunswick Community Center and leading the effort to remodel the facility and provide needed services. He was a fifty-two-year member of the Brunswick Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Merle will be remembered for his generosity and strength. Even in the most difficult of times he never complained, was always "fine" and worried first about others. His happiest moments were spending time with family.
In his last years, he resided in North Yarmouth with his companion, Gunde Sornberger.
Merle is survived by his daughter, Sandy Rudman and her husband Carl Rudman of Portland, Maine, and by his son, Rick Kennedy and his wife, Lisa Kennedy of Topsham, Maine. He is also survived by grandson Sean Rudman and his partner Mary-Ann Gildard, granddaughter Kelly Rudman, grandson Dana Kennedy and his wife Natalie, granddaughter Jayme Gilbert and her husband Eric Gilbert, as well as great-grandchildren Harry, Milo, Annabelle, Cassidy, and Kourtney; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family sends heartfelt thanks for the care and compassion provided by Maine Medical Center and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House at the end of his life.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough or The Brunswick Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
