Obituary

Brunswick – Pantelis "Pandy" Zolas passed away on Wednesday May 14, 2014. The son of George P. Zolas and Clio Sultana Evangelidou, he was born June 28, 1934 in Varna, Bulgaria. He attended schools in Varna, Bulgaria, before moving to Greece after his father was killed in 1944. He finished Gymnasium in Athens, Greece and attended university in Italy.   Pandy received his Doctorate in Naval Architecture, marine and mechanical engineering from the University of Naples, Italy.   He worked for a few years for a shipyard in Pireaus, Greece before moving to the USA to join his mother and sister. He worked for Todd Shipyard in Brooklyn, NY and was transferred to Houston, TX where he worked as chief engineer for Todd Shipyard until it closed in 1983. Afterwards, he worked briefly for Tampa Shipyard, spent 5 years as president of Abasco in Houston, TX and worked for many years at BIW in Bath. In every city, Pandy was active in the local boat modeling club or wood carving club. He was a talented and skilled boat modeler, always trying to improve his work and he leaves behind many beautiful boat models. He was always willing to teach and was very knowledgeable about anything related to boats. Pandy was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife Dieuwke, Brunswick, ME, son George and wife Molly, League City, TX, son Chris and wife Andrea, Houston, TX, son Nikolas and wife Adelina, Arlington, VA, daughter Adriana Martine and husband Chris DuPrau, Baltimore, MD and son Peter, Richmond, VA. Grand children: Matthew, Anna, Jack, Hayden, Drew, Lucas. His sister Eleni Zolas, Wash DC.   Visiting hours will be held at Stetson Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick, ME on Friday May 23rd, 2014 from 4-6pm.   Memorial donations may be made to Maine Maritime Museum, 243 Washington St. Bath, ME 04530, and Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice, 15 Strawberry Ave., Lewiston, ME 04240.
