Obituary

WOOLWICH- Mrs. Paula S. (Black) Steelman passed away at home on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, with her loving family at her side. She is the wife of the late George H. Steelman, Jr. Paula was born November 7, 1945, in Proctor, Vermont. She is the daughter of the late Dr. Paul E. and Irma (O'Donnell) Black. She was a resident of Woolwich for the past 17 years. Paula was a graduate of Brunswick High School. Paula worked as Project Manager and Consultant for Hewlett Packard in Atlanta GA for the bulk of her professional career. She then moved back to Maine and worked for CSC at BIW and L.L.Bean prior to officially retiring. In retirement she even worked as an office administrator in her son Ross' financial advisory firm, LifePlan Financial in Bath. She loved her time at all of these companies and working was always a passion that she said "kept her sharp". She was a proud Mensa member and often did puzzles, Sudoku, and other brain teasers towards the same goal. She went to Kansas University and received a Masters from National Lewis University. Her wit and personality was a hit with all who knew her well and her kindness, generosity, and active willingness to help anyone in need, on any level she could, will always be remembered and missed. Paula was known to always be willing and ready for an adventure if asked to accompany someone. That could end up being just a day of company for family or a friend, having a sit down meal or "watching traffic" over a fast food burger in the parking lot. Even an impromptu road trip or vacation was not unheard of, traveling the entire east coast of the United States over and over to see family. Paula treasured the time she spent with her loving family. She not only saw them at work daily but lived nearby and relished days that her grandkids would come over for a meal and a swim in her pool. Paula would travel whenever possible to see grandkids play in sporting events or to attend a school performance. She never missed a chance to log in online and watch any games she couldn't attend. She was known to host any and all holiday gatherings but especially loved Christmas and how it brought everyone together in one place. She loved boating in Lake Lanier Ga with her husband on a 35 foot motor yacht named the Squire and brought that passion to the coast of Maine when she returned home. She loved the beach anywhere, but Lands End Maine was a longtime favorite place to visit the sea. She was a talented musician, singer and author; delighting her friends and family with a song and guitar solo or her annual Christmas poem. Paula's rendition of Bobby Mcgee was a favorite family tradition at weddings for generations. She designed and had built, a home in Nova Scotia Canada where she summered for several years as well. Paula is survived by her two devoted sons Ross Steelman and his wife Bonnie of Westport Island and Adam Knierim and his wife Lisa of Cranbury, NJ. Her grandchildren Greta, Colton and Tristan. She is also survived by her sister Beth Miller and brothers Richard "Dick" Black and Fred Black, along with her several nieces and nephews. Paula's life celebration will be Thursday, November 7, 2024, at Bath Country Club starting at 5 PM. Her burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Rumrill Road, Wiscasset, Friday, November 8, 2024, at 2:00 PM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Stetson's Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 12 Federal Street, Brunswick, Maine.
