Phyllis Atwood Epps passed away quietly at her home May 4, 2022 following recovery from bladder cancer and an ongoing infection, at the age of 92.
Phyllis was born May 19, 1929 in Lisbon, Maine, the second of five children to Horace and Louise Moore Atwood. She was raised in Brunswick, Maine at 309 Maine Street (at Atwood Lane), attended Brunswick High School on Spring Street graduating in 1947, and the University of Maine Orono with the class of 1951 (a member of Delta Zeta sorority). As a young woman she worked at The Brunswick Record as a copywriter and editor.
She married Naval Aviator Charles W. Epps (CDR USN) of Athens, GA in 1961, and together they built a home and family on Augusta Road (Route 201) in Topsham, Maine for which they lived for the duration of their lives. They maintained a bold vision, having collaborated in moving and restoring the original farmhouse as well as moving the accompanying barn as route 201 was re-routed through their property, and often opened their property to share with others (see details) [link: http://www.epps-field.com/].
Phyllis was passionate about her house, its landscaping and gardens, and was active in designing, building and nurturing her home. An artist and woodworker, her talents spanned many interests, however her self-proclaimed obsession was her home and her only regret was she couldn't finish her dream.
Phyllis was a committed Republican and Veterans advocate, donating to numerous charities and contributing memorabilia to the Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum - you could always find her driving around town with a "Fly Navy" sticker on her bumper. She was the last surviving member of the Epps Outlaws, those spouses who married into the Ben and Omie Williams Epps family of Athens, who welcomed her as their representative from the far North.
She is survived by her brother Larry Atwood, sister Merri Tombrink, and her sister-in-law Sue Atwood of Topsham, and her children Chip Epps (Charles Jr.) of Brunswick, and Stacy Epps of Topsham. She follows the passing of her husband Charles in 2014, and her brothers Stanley and Ronald Atwood of Topsham.
Her ashes will lie in rest with her husband on their Topsham property, as well as the Oconee Hill Cemetery at Charles' childhood home of Athens, GA.
At her request, there will be no services, however a small gathering will be hosted at Fairground Cafe in Topsham on her 93rd birthday, May 19 at 6pm. Donations in her memory may be made to Midcoast Humane [link: https://midcoasthumane.org/donate/] society.
